http://www.dianping.com/shop/1942651

The Best Crab in San Francisco

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Albert happened to be in San Francisco and had dinner at R&G Lounge on the same day we were there.  He did have the famous Pepper & Salt Crab (椒鹽蟹) that we missed.  Here’s how the dish looks.

R&G Crab

Any Good Restaurant in San Francisco Chinatown?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

20090922 R&G Lounge AWe had to go to San Francisco today and decided to have lunch in Chinatown. The main reason for choosing R&G Lounge (嶺南小館) was to take home their famous R&G Special Beef which is the favorite dish of our kids.

R&G is famous for their crabs but we wanted to try something new this time.  We started with the Salmon Avocado Egg Rolls (三文魚春卷) which was OK but not exciting. Maybe I am old fashion, I like to have bean sprouts (豆芽) inside egg rolls than this fancy stuff.

Our order of Soy Sauce Chicken (玫瑰豉油雞) arrived when I was sipping my glass of house Chardonnay. This chicken was so good I wished Albert was there with us – Albert always looks for good soy sauce chicken wherever he goes. The delicious sauce penetrated inside the chicken so thoroughly that every strand of meat was tasty.  Chicken thigh and drumstick were extremely tender and smooth (嫩滑).  The breast was a little tough but that was understandable. My concern was that some readers of this blog (Wallace for one) might swallow their tongues simply seeing a vivid picture of this chicken.  For reason of safety, I adjusted the lens of my camera to blur the picture a little bit.

The Fresh Fish with Ginger & Onion (薑蔥煎焗魚頭腩) was crispy on the outside and moist inside (香脆). On hindsight, this dish might be a little dry to go with rice but perfect as a snack with beer.

The R&G Special Beef tastes like Beef Jerky (牛肉乾), only a lot more juicy inside than Beef Jerky.  It’s a little sweet with fruity taste.  Our kids could not stop eating at dinner.

Here’s comment from Albert:

“We had dinner at the R&G Lounge yesterday. The crab was good as usual and the soy chicken too. We went there at 6:00pm and by 6:30pm they were full and had a line. FYI, they are offering a $25 coupon, just go to their web site and print it out.” 3:08pm September 23, 2009

Roast Guinea Pig for You? (by TM Lui)

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Inspired by Wallace’s Peruvian feast, my high-school friend TM Lui promptly submitted the following report:

P1010317“In January this year, after visiting the ruins of Machu Picchu while waiting for the return train to Cusco, I had had roasted rabbit sized guinea pig in a restaurant in the Machu Picchu town near the railway station. The meat of the roasted guinea pig was tasteful and tender and had a texture like chicken drum stick.

The first photo would show how the guinea pig would have looked like before ending up on the dinner  table.  The second photo would show how the guinea pig had looked like while on the dinner plate. If I recall correctly, the roasted guinea pig cost me US$20.00, perhaps a tourist price in Machu Picchu, Peru.  Mind you, whether you are adventurous in food or not, the Peruvian do eat guinea pigs, as a source of protein.”

Peruvian Food in San Francisco? (by Wallace)

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Wallace had to take his daughters to taste some Latin American food because the Spanish teacher wanted her students to eat and learn the Spanish culture.  Peruvian food was a logical choice since Liliana, Wallace’s wife, grew up in Peru.  After evaluating the menus of a couple of restaurants, they decided to try Fina Estampa, a Peruvian and Spanish Cuisine, located at 1100 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94109, Tel: (415) 440-6343.  I was struggling and finally decided to let them try it out first – too lazy to drive up to the city.

Now looking at the pictures from Wallace, it is obvious that I should have joined them.  One has to go the distance to eat well!

The Best Restaurant in Kyoto is French! (by 惠子)

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Trdelník

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

According to Wikipedia, Trdelník is a traditional cake from the Slovakian town Skalica and is sweet pastry. It is made from rolled dough, wrapped around a stick then grilled and topped with sugar and walnut mix. I saw a lot of Trdelník in Prague and finally had a taste of it when Phyllis bought a roll after lunch in the old-town square.

It is a little crunchy and chewy and a bit on the sweet side. Not a bad snack if you are hungry. I probably will not buy it every time I see it but at least I can tell others I know how Trdelník tastes. Here’s a video on the making of Trdelník.
